Last Saturday, we were privileged to be at the opening of Fresh Gallery’s latest exhibition, “To Live + Die in South Auckland” by Vasemaca Tavola, curated by Nigel Borrell.

What made this exhibition special, is that Tavola was the founding director of Fresh Gallery 18 years ago. The works reflect this whakapapa, as Tavola’s matuvuvale/family are referenced throughout the artworks that are displayed above, on and in the gallery. Tavola’s daughter also played double bass as part of the Sistema Aotearoa string ensemble that are made up of local Otara school students.

The scattered arrows on the floor add to the show, by directing you to different works, which range in scale and textile.

A breathtaking and sombre work is the monomono quilt, handmade by Tavola and fellow artist, designer and Celebrate Aotearoa founder, Czarina Wilson. Made in just 5 days after Fa’anana Efeso’s sudden death and presented to Collins’ widow, Vasa Fia Collins and their two daughters at his funeral, the words, “Efeso 274” stand out in their pure white puffy squares.

Come and check out this epic show, which also has three public programming events, including a paper collage making workshop with Tavola herself. Book through the gallery now for more details and to avoid disappointment: freshgalleryotara@aklc.govt.nz.
