Last Saturday, we went to Auckland Transport’s Bike Skills session at Manurewa High School, especially for kids aged 2-8 years old. Riding from Ōtāhuhu to the train station was pleasant, especially as the weather was hot and sunny. We then caught a train to Homai train station, where the ride along Browns Road was quiet and residential, passing Netball Manurewa, which later proved to be helpful (This event had no public or open toilets at the high school). Despite this, the cycling event, run by Bigfoot Adventures, was well-attended with eager kids, learning to ride and their even more eager parents. The atmosphere was relaxed and fun. Thanks to Bianca and Hugh who greatly helped us out with their skills, smiles and patience.

In the arvo, our director, Louise Tu’u, attended the Bronze Bike Skills, where they were pleasantly learning alongside fellow womxn of colour. Going over basics like braking with your left hand while you swing your hips over the bike to mount (Who knew how incredibly helpful this was?) and an emphasis on slow, meditative practice was very helpful. Thanks to Steph who led this session with expertise, empathy and cheer and Liam and Hugh, who were also awesome support.
