Yesterday, we passed through the Toia Garden at Otahuhu, one of the seven community gardens that the Auckland Teaching Gardens run in south Auckland. They are located in Otara with two gardens, Papatoetoe, Manurewa, Middlemore and Mangere, which is the mothership garden.

The fresh and beautiful vegetables in the garden beds in Otahuhu are all FREE. That is because this is the only open garden, available to anyone.

Food insecurity is a real thing so if you are feeling hungry and need real food, please come and bring a bag and a knife to take some luscious and FREE greens.
Even better, consider learning how to look after these amazing and bountiful gardens by contacting Auckland Teaching Gardens via email: atgtinc@xtra.co.nz. There are some people who drink alcohol nearby and get carried away by destroying the plants so if you are one of those people, please share your energy by learning how to look after your food sources.
Thank you to the amazing volunteer, KL, who showed and gave us small samples of NZ spinach or miner’s lettuce, perpetual spinach, marjoram, rosemary, raddicchio and a beautiful fennel bulb… for FREE.
