Random Bike Rides: Ōtāhuhu to Fresh Gallery in Otara

Today’s beautiful weather helped the ride from Otahuhu to Fresh Gallery in Otara for our director, Louise Tu’u. Riding down Avenue Road, turning right into Water Street then left down Trenwith St where there is a shared cycle and walking path, Louise then turned right into Frank Grey Place, right into Curlew Bay Road then left into McManus Place. At the end of this place begins the Highbrook shared cycle and walk pathway. (We don’t know the actual name of this path so if somebody does, please shout out to us!)

The ride is lovely, especially on a sunny day like this. Continuing onto Highbrook Drive but heading towards Otara, the path for cyclists and pedestrians is relatively safe.

Bairds Road was in bloom.

The ribbon lei making workshop which Louise attended, led by Genevieve Pini, was very well attended. It forms part of the public programming for the group show, “The Strength of Skilled Hands”, featuring work by three Pacific artists from Tāmaki Makaurau – Ofa Filoialii (right), Genevieve Pini (left) and Ioana Schwalger (centre), who were all here today, supporting each other. This show centres on the common Christian faith of all three artists, with work, weaving in Biblical text with Pasifika heritage through sewing, painting and photography. It finishes next Saturday, so make sure you see it before it closes.

Louise started on her very first lei: a yellow one. Here are the progress photos, the attendees and Genevieve, saving her lei.

Fa’afetai tele lava ia Genevieve for your skill, patience and leading such a cool workshop, Ioana and Ofa for your welcoming, Fresh Gallery staff for your hospitality and looking after Louise’s bike and the other attendees.
